Tejiendo Redes, Sobre Ruedas
Promotion of youth participation in the municipality of Murcia
Tejiendo Redes, Sobre Ruedas is another project that was born thanks to the initiative for promoting youth participation in the municipality of Murcia, granted by the Department of Equality, Youth, and Cooperation for Development of the Murcia City Council.
We plan to carry out 4 activities between October 2023 and June 2024. Here is a brief summary of the two that we have already completed:
- Bike ride to La Contraparada. A bicycle outing was organized from the center of Murcia to La Contraparada (Javalì Nuevo) with about 20 participants, in addition to CES volunteers, of all ages and backgrounds. It was an opportunity to celebrate and raise awareness for November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
- Velo al viento. Thanks to collaboration with the Aye Social Culture cooperative, a workshop was held in Los Rosales neighborhood (El Palmar, Murcia). We were able to involve 25 women residents in the neighborhood and had the privilege of teaching them, or re-teaching them, how to ride a bicycle. This activity aimed to positively impact the lives of the participants, providing them with skills, strengthening their sense of empowerment and community, and raising awareness about the importance of using bicycles as a sustainable means of transportation and for healthy leisure activities. During this activity, we also had the help of CES volunteers who decided to join us to lend a hand.
We are going to develop two other activities:
- Screening of the documentary “We Are Traffic” in high schools. This aims to raise awareness among young people about a cycling phenomenon that occurs monthly in several cities around the world. Its goal is to integrate sustainable mobility into the public agenda and improve cyclist safety by trusting that it is safer when in a group. It is a reflection on the viability of bicycles in cities, the problems encountered in traffic, and the efficiency of this mode of transportation. It highlights the health benefits for individuals, allowing them to maintain daily physical activity, and the environmental sustainability benefits in urban areas.
- Festibici. This activity constitutes the closing of the project. Depending on the attendance, random working groups will be formed to allow different profiles to mix. Each group will be assigned a bike and will have to fix whatever they see necessary and decorate it with useful accessories made from recycled materials. A contest will be opened, in which each group can present their final work to the rest of the participants.
