Environmental awareness in an intercultural environment
Nowadays, sustainability is an imperative need for our survival, and the lack of action will lead to more severe consequences due to the depletion of natural resources. Despite the EU’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, reports indicate limited improvements. Therefore, we have developed “Pedalling for Sustainability,” a youth exchange under the Erasmus+ programme aimed at raising awareness about sustainability and promoting the use of bicycles as a healthier and more sustainable mode of transportation, in order to achieve the SDGs.
“Pedalling for Sustainability” took place in Murcia (Spain) in September 2023, involving 30 young people from 6 countries. It had the following objectives:
Participants from countries that have already adopted cycling as a means of transport shared experiences and conducted workshops to train others in its use, highlighting its impact on health and society. Additionally, participants were encouraged to plan campaigns and events to promote cycling infrastructures.
It is expected that participants have fully understood the concept of sustainability and the SDGs, as well as the benefits of cycling for health, the environment, and the community. They are expected to promote cycling in their communities, generating an impact beyond the project and overcoming mental barriers and stereotypes, while strengthening cooperation among partner organisations.
