Project selected for the Regenerative Communities Fund (Funding Fairer Futures Programme), co-financed by the European Union. Launched to promote social inclusion, emotional well-being and a connection with Murcia’s environmental and cultural heritage
“Echar Raíces: Cultivating Connections in the Garden” is a community-based initiative that uses an urban garden as a space for meeting, learning, and participation. The project aims to involve people with disabilities in a shared process of caring for the land, while strengthening their sense of belonging, autonomy, and personal wellbeing. The project is part of a European network of communities that promote regenerative practices and models of a just eco-social transition.
Through regular meetings and hands-on gardening activities, the garden becomes an accessible and inclusive space where nature, culture, and relationships intertwine; contributing to local climate action based on care and environmental regeneration. The huerta of Murcia, a key element of local identity, is presented as a living tool to rediscover traditions, promote values of cooperation, and foster a real connection with the territory.
The project is developed in collaboration with ASSIDO and involves a group of participants in an ongoing process of planting, caring for, and observing plant growth, complemented by environmental awareness activities and spaces for exchange.
The project is structured through a series of activities over time to ensure continuity and active participation. After an initial preparation phase together with the ASSIDO team, a collective planting day will be organised. Subsequently, regular meetings will be held to care for the garden, observe plant growth, and encourage collective reflection. These activities will be complemented by awareness-raising actions on sustainability and the culture of the huerta. In addition, a policy dialogue event with local institutions will be organised, where participants will be able to share their experience and highlight the value of inclusive green spaces.
