Environmental awareness in the neighbourhood of Los Rosales

Five young people (18-24 years old) residents of the Los Rosales neighbourhood in El Palmar (Murcia) make up the core group of the Solidarity Project “My Neighbourhood, My Mirror”.

They have decided to act in their neighbourhood to change the reality that surrounds them and solve the environmental problems they have observed. Thanks to an intervention process with counselling workshops for the creation of a solidarity project, a group of young people with common interests has been created, who learned to look at their neighbourhood with different eyes and to respond to the needs of their community.

My Neighbourhood, My Mirror is a year-long project with different artistic interventions around the detected environmental problems. The objective is to make the inhabitants aware of the problem of garbage, taking responsibility for the image of their neighbourhood by getting involved in the different activities proposed: creating green characters with primary school children, painting litter bins with the characters created, rehabilitating abandoned walls, giving them visibility to the recycling of bread, installation of mirrors in the corridors of the neighbourhood to arouse interest and awareness about caring for the neighbourhood.

With this initiative, we want to involve young people, children and adults so that they can take responsibility for this common problem. For the group, it is essential to promote solidarity in the neighbourhood to achieve a solid network of close mutual support that forms part of the space they inhabit on a daily basis.

It is an opportunity to be active members of their community, learn to manage a project, execute it and, above all, participate in caring for the environment for future generations.
